Company Guidelines

1.                   The objectives of the Vacation Internship Programme (VIP) and Industrial Attachment Programme (IAP) are to :-

(a) provide opportunities for the students to use their initiative to translate theories learnt in classrooms and perform assignments in an actual working environment;

(b) instill in students the right kind of work attitudes and professionalism through interaction with people in the companies, and observation of their future roles in industry; and

(c) familiarize with on-the-job training requirements so that they can become effective and productive to their respective companies much sooner than is usual for fresh graduates

These programmes will also enable companies to assess working attitudes and technical capabilities of our students who may be potential candidates for permanent employment upon their graduation.

2.         It is our hope that students will receive a meaningful engineering experience during the internship. We expect the training to have substantial engineering content and in addition, students should be exposed to some, if not all, of the following: -

(a)     Management – including responsibilities and daily routines of an engineer or a technologist, as the case may be, and administrative duties;

(b)  Computer applications – using the computer as an aid in planning, designing and analysis of engineering projects;

(c)  Cost implications – awareness of cost effectiveness in engineering proposals/designs;

(d)  Safety measures – awareness of importance of safety in the organization;

(e)  Quality control – awareness of quality in all jobs done;

(f)   Marketing – using the relevant technical knowledge in the application of product promotion.

(g)  Customer Service – using relevant product knowledge to articulate and communicate with their customers.

3.         The company supervisor should:-

(a) work out a suitable training schedule/plan for the student(s) before the start of internship;

(b) guide, advise, discuss and review with student(s) their accomplishments and progress;

(c) endorse student’s log sheet and company clearance form (to be provided by the student) before student submit his/her internship report (once every 6 weeks) to the school for continual assessment; <Note: signing of company clearance form is to ensure that no sensitive or confidential information pertaining to the company or project is disclosed. This is to avoid unnecessary legal implications.>

4.                   A NUS Mentor (also a Faculty Member) will be assigned to each Engineering student going on internship. Company visit(s) will be made by the NUS Mentor should the need arises. The company supervisor may communicate with the NUS Mentor via email or phone to discuss issues concerning the student.

5.         The NUS Faculty of Engineering takes a very serious view of students whose performance is unsatisfactory. The company supervisor should immediately draw this to the attention of the students' Mentor.

6.         Intellectual property developed by students during the course of internship shall belong to the company. The company is encouraged to show some form of appreciation for the student's contributions. The company shall grant the student and NUS, royalty-free rights to print, publish or reproduce students’ internship reports.

7.         Leave during internship

(a)     Vacation Leave - Paid vacation leave is to be granted at the discretion of the company. It should, however, not exceed 7 days in total.

(b)     Medical Leave – The student should inform company supervisor immediately and submit a medical certificate later, with a copy of the medical certificate to NUS Faculty of Engineering.

(c)     Reservist (NS) In-Camp-Training (ICT) – The company should release student on unpaid leave to do ICT if requested by MINDEF.

(d)     Competition Leave – The company should release student on unpaid leave if they are representing Singapore or NUS in a sports, cultural or other types of competition.

(e)     Other types of leave may be granted at the discretion of the company. These include compassionate leave, NUS-related activities

8.                   The Faculty suggests that companies pay an allowance of S$800 per month to each student. Companies are also exempted from making CPF contributions with respect to the students (via Government Gazette Subsidiary Legislation Supplement No.28 dated 1 June 1973).

9.                   All full-time matriculated international undergraduate students are not required to apply for Work Permit to work during the University's official vacation period. For more information, please visit Ministry of Manpower (MOM) FAQs website on “Employment of Student Pass Holders”.

10.               It is compulsory for all the students to purchase an insurance policy before going for their internship programme. Please be informed that part of the students' miscellaneous fees is contributed to their health and insurance which entitle them to a minimum coverage as follows:

      Personal Accident Insce coverage:
- 24-hr worldwide coverage
- Death benefit: $30,000
- Permanent Disability: up to 150% of $30,000, depending on the disablement
- Medical expenses relating to accidents: $5,000 per accident.

We would recommend companies to purchase additional insurance with a higher coverage.

In addition, NUS has also taken up a Public Liability Insurance Policy that will indemnify the companies against any claims that arise out of industrial hazards and accidents.

11.        The company is required to inform NUS if it would like to have our student(s) join earlier before the official start date of the internship or extend the internship period. A mutual agreement between the student(s) and the company must be reached before NUS is informed. The company is also required to inform NUS if it intends to send our student(s) for overseas attachment during the course of internship.

12.        Students on industrial attachment (IA) will be allowed to take up to two (2) modules in the evening, subjected to the company's and university's approval. For more info, kindly visit http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/undergrad/epmc/evening_modules.html
