Introduction
Industrial attachment has always been an integral part of the Engineering education in Singapore. The aim of attachment to industrial organizations is to give the students an opportunity of gaining work experience in industry. This will enable them to exercise their own initiative and seek to learn as much as possible from observation and from actual work participation.
With the fast-changing pace of technology and Singapore’s close links with international organizations, the Faculty of Engineering considers it vital for students to gain experience and exposure from the nation’s world-wide partners. This will allow the students to have first-hand insight into the functioning of multinational corporations and research centres as well as be exposed to different cultural scenes: all part of the overall effort to cultivate a more research-oriented climate in Singapore. It is hoped that the students placed in such institutions will be able to gain in terms of the knowledge, attitude and international outlook expected of today’s well-educated engineers. The lessons learnt by these students will also filter down to their classmates as they work together in their final year.
General Principles
In addition to engineering technical skills, students are expected to be exposed to some, if not all, of the following areas.
-
Functioning of multinational corporations and research centres
-
Research and development activities - to personally experience the organization’s research climate
-
Human relations - working through people and with them to get things done
-
Cost implications - awareness of cost effectiveness in engineering proposals, designs, and production
-
Computer applications - utilization of the computer as an aid in planning, design and analysis of engineering projects
-
Productivity - awareness of measures taken to improve productivity at the workplace.
Timing And Duration
The attachment will last 24 weeks and is scheduled to commence on 3 January
2005 and end on 18 June 2005.
Trainees
Only students who have finished their third year undergraduate studies (pre-final year) are eligible for selection for the overseas traineeship. These students are required to have outstanding academic records and have to undergo an interview conducted by the Faculty’s Industrial Attachment Committee.
Other General Information
Students are also required to submit a 5-15 pages IA report at the end of EVERY six weeks for 24 weeks of their overseas IA.
The objective of requiring a student to submit a report is to give him an opportunity of expressing in writing, in a clear and concise form, the experience gained from his industrial placement. The report will also provide useful feedback on the training
programme so that improvements or modifications to future programmes may be considered.
The students are reminded that they are not allowed to disrupt their attachment unless under extenuating circumstances (eg. medical leave) or unless they have applied for leave from the company.
Should the students not comply with company regulations or if the Faculty has received an adverse report from the company on the student, the student will be called to appear before a disciplinary panel.
All students are required to take up a personal accident insurance covering medical/hospitalization expenses, before the commencement of their attachment.
