UROP Guidelines for Exchange Students The Faculty of Engineering launched UROP, an acronym for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, at the commencement of the academic year 1994/95. The purpose of UROP is to involve undergraduate students in ongoing research within the Faculty of Engineering. The level of involvement can range from being an assistant in experimental research to doing tasks such as development of software or investigating a specific topic. Participation across departments is permissible. It is hoped that UROP would benefit students by
In 1996, the UROP program was elevated to a National Undergraduate Research Program by Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*Star), then known as the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB). All reports produced by the UROP students will be published in the annual National UROP Congress Proceedings. Students will receive their certificates at the Congress and selected students will present their research findings. Eligibility Every undergraduate student, in the first, second and third stages of engineering, is welcome to participate in UROP.Participation in cross departmental projects is allowed. Students can do a UROP project to satisfy the Unrestricted Elective Modules' MCs. The module code is EG2605. A student gets 4 MCs for a successfully completed UROP project involving minimum of 130 hours of work done over a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters. For Students matriculated in AY2004/05 & AY2005/06, UROP is graded on Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis. For Students matriculated from AY2006/07 onwards, UROP is graded on Completed Satisfactory/Completed Unsatisfactory (CS/CU) basis. Students of the Faculty of Engineering can use this module to fulfill the modular credits (MC) for Unrestricted Elective Module (UEM). Students can obtain modular credit from UROP only once. Requirements The student will work on a UROP project for a minimum of 130 hours over maximum 2 consecutive semesters. On completion of the project, the student is required to submit a 6-8 page report in the prescribed format for assessment. The report of the successfully completed project will be included in the proceedings of the annual Congress of the National Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. Students are required participate in the Congress where selected students make oral or poster presentation of their research findings. The list of UROP projects is available here Foreign students interested in particular projects should liaise directly with the project supervisors via email to find out more about the project. Pertinent questions to ask may include the following. The project supervisors will also welcome this opportunity to find out more about the students' academic background and available time. When there is a match in interests, the supervisor would reserve the project for the student. The student would receive an acknowledgement email upon reservation placed by the project supervisor. Students are also encouraged to come up with ideas for projects in areas of their interest. In this case, the student can consult the Department's UROP coordinator, who can refer him/her to appropriate faculty members. Since participation in UROP entails certain time commitments, the student is advised to consider whether he/she can afford the time away from coursework before committing to a UROP project. Official Registration (IMPORTANT) Upon settling in NUS, the student who has reserved the project in advance in their home university MUST approach the supervisor personally for official registration of the module. Please note that the supervisor would need your NUS matriculation number for registration. Upon successful registration, the student and the supervisor will be informed by e-mail. The student may then proceed to work on preparing a plan, defining milestones and intermediate goals in consultation with the supervisor. After which, the student may then proceed to work on the project according to the schedule worked out with the project supervisor, and is expected to complete the work within the stipulated period, normally before the student returns to his/her home university. By completing the project successfully, the student will obtain a "Satisfactory" grade for EG2605. An " Feedback For the UROP program to be effective, the UROP committee welcomes feedback from the UROP students and from their project supervisors. At the end of the project or at the end of each semester whichever is earlier, a feedback of the student's experience must be submitted, through the feedback form available on the UROP's home page. If there is any query or clarification needed during the course of the UROP project, please do not hesitate to contact the respective departmental coordinators. Patents and Copyrights Student inventions and other work such as computer software arising from student's UROP activity are governed by University rules. Information may be obtained from https://aserv.nus.edu.sg/staff/intro/rules.pdf or NUS Industry & Technology Relations Office (INTRO).
